The Sacraments
SPC practices two sacraments: Baptism and Communion (The Lord’s Supper). We believe that these are the two sacraments clearly required by the New Testament, though we recognize that some Christian churches have more. Both are “outward signs of an inward grace” and are anchored in God’s faithfulness and mercy. Ultimately, the sacraments express tangibly the promises of God in the Gospel, and are to be received with humble faith.
Communion
At SPC, Communion is typically celebrated on the first Sunday of the month. Those who desire to receive the sacrament are invited forward to one of several stations where elders hold the bread and the cup. While music plays, lines form at these stations as worshipers break off a piece of the bread, dip it in the cup, partake, and then return to their seats. Those choosing not to receive communion simply remain in their seats. Those who are physically unable to come forward are served at their seats by a team of elders. All who profess faith in Jesus Christ – regardless of age – are invited to receive the sacrament. Church membership at SPC is not a requirement.
Baptism
Baptisms are planned in consultation with one of the pastors and are a part of our regular Sunday worship services. SPC baptizes children, youth, and adults: youth and adults based on their personal profession of faith, children on the basis of their parent’s profession of faith. Since the congregation promises to encourage the faith of those being baptized, church membership is typically required.
