1. What is your experience with fasting? Is this something you've tried or heard about? What general feelings come with this topic for you - positive/negative?
2. What are the main reasons that followers of Jesus are to fast?
3. If fasting both highlights our appetites and also brings them into submission, how might this be helpful for us, in the 1st world?
4. When we begin a new practice, it's important to start small, where we are (not where we should be); to think subtraction, not addition (how can I simplify, slow down and not make things more complicated); to remember the J-curve (we tend to get worse before we get better); and lastly, that there is no formation without repetition (Spiritual formation is slow, deep, cumulative work that happens over years, not weeks.). Talk about the change process as a group: where you have you found success? Pray for one another as you try something new.
