Amos 2:6-7 | Rev. Jake Medcalf | Sammamish Presbyterian Church

In this message from our Amos series, Rev. Jake Medcalf compared God's prophetic word to a caring coach delivering honest feedback — not to tear down, but because He believes in His people and refuses to settle for less than their best. Jake walked through Amos's background as a shepherd and farmer from Tekoa who was sent north to confront the church at Bethel, then unpacked how Amos built his sermon by naming the sins of surrounding nations before turning the spotlight on Judah and Israel themselves. The heart of the message centered on Amos 2:6-7, where Jake explored how the wealthy in Israel exploited the poor through practices that were legal but far from just — and drew parallels to modern issues like predatory lending, exploitative labor, and systemic inequities in housing and justice. He introduced "LERP" (Look, Examine, Resource, Proximity) as a framework for response, challenging the congregation to see clearly, examine their own participation in unjust systems, steward their resources well, and draw near to those who are struggling. Jake closed by pointing to hope rooted in grace — reminding us that just as God rescued Israel from Egypt, He has fully paid our debt through Jesus, and that the more deeply we grasp that grace, the more our hearts are shaped to care for the marginalized and oppressed.
