Rev. Jake Medcalf returned from the Tijuana Mission Experience and encouraged others to go, reflecting on how extended time together revealed God at work in people’s stories. Launching the new sermon series “The Chosen” with the message “You Are Seen,” he introduced The Chosen’s portrayal of Matthew as a brilliant, detail-oriented, socially awkward tax collector likely known by Peter, then showed the clip of Jesus calling Matthew to “Follow me.” Jake highlighted how Jesus crossed social barriers to invite an excluded yet comfortable and protected man into discipleship, and challenged listeners to locate themselves in Matthew’s longing or comfort, in Peter’s resistance as someone sinned against, and ultimately in Jesus’ calling to extend grace and belonging. He connected this to Henri Nouwen’s prodigal son framework and invited everyone to disciple others, then led communion, emphasizing the table’s welcome for all.
